EFM 025, Static Electrical Field Meter with USB Interface
Electrostatic charging occurs when electrical charges accumulate on the surface of materials. This charging can arise through various processes, such as friction, contact and separation of materials, or the movement of materials in an electric field.
The hazards posed by electrostatic charges are diverse. On the one hand, they can lead to unwanted discharges that damage sensitive electronic components or impair their function. This can result in high costs and production downtime. On the other hand, there is also the risk of fires or explosions, especially in environments where flammable materials or chemicals are processed. An electrostatic discharge can be an ignition source in such cases.
Finally, the prolonged presence of people in the vicinity of strong electrostatic charges is a health risk.
To minimize these risks, DIN 61340 recommends the implementation of ESD-safe workplaces, the use of antistatic materials, and the training of employees in the handling of electrostatic charges. By adhering to these guidelines, companies can not only ensure the safety of their employees, but also safeguard the quality and reliability of their products. To do this, the source of these charges must first be located, and the magnitude and polarity of the charge must be measured.
Our electric field meters are ideally suited for this purpose, as well as for monitoring and controlling the measures taken against electrostatic charges.
Please note: The electric field meter measures direct fields and cannot measure alternating fields!
The EFM 025 electric field meter operates according to the field mill principle. The charges induced by the electric field generate an alternating current proportional to the field strength. This current is measured using a selective amplifier without energy being removed from the electric field over time.
The O-LED display shows the calculated surface tension at a defined measuring distance or the field strength in V/m.
Different distances from the surface can be selected for measuring surface voltage:
1 cm
2 cm (factory setting)
5 cm
10 cm
20 cm
After restarting the device, the measuring distance is always set to 2 cm (factory setting).
The measuring device then displays the calculated measured value in kV.
Different measuring ranges can be selected for measuring electrostatic field strength:

►5 kV/m
USB Interface
The device is charged via the USB interface when connected to a PC or a USB power supply (5 V / 200 mA).
The device turns on when the USB cable is plugged in. The charging status is indicated by an LED:
LED Off: No USB cable connected
LED Red: USB cable connected => Battery is charging
LED Green: USB cable connected => Battery is fully charged
The EFM XX5 software is included in the delivery. Connected to a PC via the USB interface, the software offers the following functions:
